Dr. Helen Nissenbaum
Helen Nissenbaum is Professor of Media, Culture and Communication, and Computer Science, at New York University, where she is also Director of the Information Law Institute. Her areas of expertise span social, ethical, and political implications of information technology and digital media. Nissenbaum's research publications have appeared in journals of philosophy, politics, law, media studies, information studies, and computer science. She has written and edited four books, including Privacy in Context: Technology, Policy, and the Integrity of Social Life, which was published in 2010 by Stanford University Press. The National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Ford Foundation, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the National Coordinator have supported her work on privacy, trust online, and security, as well as several studies of values embodied in computer system design, including search engines, digital games, facial recognition techn ology, and health information systems.
Nissenbaum holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford University and a B.A. (Hons) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before joining the faculty at NYU, she served as Associate Director of the Center for Human Values at Princeton University.

Dr. Carol Miernicki Steeg
Dr. Carol Miernicki Steeg holds the position of Vice President, Intellectual Property at PARTEQ Innovations, the technology transfer office of Queen's University. She is registered as a patent agent in both Canada and the United States. Her responsibilities at PARTEQ include assessing the patentability of inventions, drafting patent applications, prosecuting patent applications in the U.S. and Canadian Patent Offices, giving validity and infringement opinions, managing the extensive foreign patent portfolio, heading the PARTEQ patent group and guiding the patent portfolios of numerous PARTEQ spinoff companies. In this role, Dr. Miernicki Steeg oversees the IP portfolios of a broad spectrum of technologies, spanning many disciplines, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, engineering, informatics, chemistry and materials.
Prior to coming to PARTEQ in 1995, Dr. Miernicki Steeg was a member of the Intellectual Property Group of Blake, Cassels & Graydon in Toronto, a scientific liaison for the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and a postdoctoral fellow at the Mount Sinai Hospital Research Institute in Toronto. She received a B.Sc.with Distinction in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Cornell University. Dr. Miernicki Steeg is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
